Intergenerational anxiety, by project manager Lorraine Barfoot

'I’d never heard of the Hoffman Process and I hadn’t intended to do it myself. Initially, this was all about my daughter Kathryn attending. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be writing this...

As I was telling Kathryn about my relationship with my mum, I suddenly saw how my mother had transferred her anxious behaviour to me and how in my turn I’d passed it on to Kathryn. I realised that I’d filled Kathryn with my anxieties and my habit of catastrophising. This anxious soundtrack had played out over generations. Kathryn explained to me that by completing the Process pre-course work she saw how many patterns she shared with me. The longer we talked, the more I realised that I needed to do the Process myself...

Discovering my authentic self was the first aim that I wrote in my Process workbook on day one of the course and I realised on my return home that this requires daily examination. Believe me, it’s so liberating to know that I don’t have to be at the mercy of my unconscious behaviours. I have so much more compassion towards others and particularly to myself.

I thought the Process was all about my daughter. It isn’t and it isn’t even just about me. For my part I realised how interconnected my behaviours and patterns are with my own parents, my grandparents and my siblings. I can also see now how this has clearly impacted on my working relationships and friendships too. From my daughter’s perspective, her willingness to embark on this journey and her ongoing awareness of her patterns means that she has a real chance of addressing some of those negative behaviours that have seeped down through the generations.'

We'd like to thank Lorraine (and Kathryn) for sharing their Process Story. To read Lorraine's article in full, click here

Lessons in living authentically, by teacher James Bodinger

'Quite early on, I was struck by the power of the group. I’ve never witnessed such vulnerability and openness before and this has stuck with me more than anything from that week. The awareness of this connection is so powerful that it’s had a huge impact on the work I do in school. I’m now happy and confident to show vulnerability with my pupils. This has brought barriers down and allowed genuine connections to form. It’s been particularly useful with the more challenging students.

I feel that Hoffman has accelerated all the things I was trying to achieve at work. It’s impacted my relationship with my boss – for example, I’m better at asking for help when I need it. I think she found this a bit unnerving when it first happened! Now she really appreciates my honesty. My relationships with the learning support assistants has markedly improved, as I’ve taken a greater interest in them and their role. I suppose you could say I’ve become more ‘person-centred’ in my work.

Doing Quad Checks was a revelation to me. I realised how much I’d neglected my body in my younger years by essentially chasing dopamine hits. I’d really taken my body for granted and now realise I need to take more care of it. I used to find it hard to listen to what my body needed and now I’m much more attuned to this, as well as my emotional and spiritual needs.

In fact, finding my Spiritual Self has been a revelation and drives a lot of what I do now... As a young man, I was scared a lot of the time. What the Process has done is to take away ‘fear’; I’m not scared any more. I used to be so afraid of failing; so afraid of risk. Now I just see a world of exciting possibilities before me.'
