Hoffman graduate Malcolm Stern is a psychotherapist, author, public speaker and co-founder of
Alternatives
, 'the UK's landmark speaking platform for spiritual teachers, alternative thinkers, conscious business leaders and visionary thought provokers.'
In 2014 Malcolm's daughter Melissa took her own life. Since then, Malcolm has chosen to speak openly about his loss. He regularly leads talks on processing bereavement, journeying through grief and challenging the stigma of suicide in our society.
'Finding platforms where I can speak about what happened helps me, and is part of giving Melissa’s death meaning,'
he says.
We interviewed Malcolm in the build-up to his appearance at this year's
Compassionate Mental Health
conference and discussed topics ranging from our society's fear of mortality to embracing our own vulnerability.

For more than 20 years, Elizabeth Shassere has led corporate teams through transformation and improvement, in organisations ranging from large government agencies to startups. She’s also the founder and CEO of the software company
Textocracy Ltd
.
Elizabeth's rise to corporate leadership wasn't a comfortable one.
'I was in a tough job in a tough sector. I was working harder and harder because I wanted the system to work... I hoped if I kept chipping away it would all come right in the end. Then one day it dawned on me that it really wouldn’t.'
In her article on our website, Elizabeth reveals how doing the Process helped pinpoint the cause of her negative relationship with work. She also shares how her ingenious method of applying Hoffman tools to workplace problems resulted in a new, authentic leadership approach. The accompanying book,
Becoming a Fearless Leader,
was published last year to excellent reviews.

Whether you're spinning the feeling wheel, downloading Closure or shaking your Bashaker, the Hoffman app provides an instant, handheld connection to the Process tools. You can wipe out your Dark Side with the flick of a finger or run through a Quad check discreetly on the bus; with the Graduate Connect feature switched on, it can even locate and message other Hoffies in your immediate area. How do you use yours?
|
|
|
More than 7,000 people have downloaded the Hoffman app to date. If you're one of them, we'd love you to complete our
online survey
and tell us what you think of it. Which features are useful for you? How often do you use them? Any features that you'd like to see added?
The survey's anonymous, takes about four minutes and will help us improve and develop the app for everyone. And yes, you can do it on your smartphone...

'Despite its grandeur (Broughton was runner-up to feature as ‘Downton Abbey’ in the eponymous TV show), the house is surprisingly homely... Even the most palatial of the bedrooms felt warm and cosy on chilly winter nights, while impressive water pressure ensured immense baths were quickly drawn and showers blissfully reviving....'

February's top tip: Are you a good listener?
|
|
|
Today, take careful note of the conversations around you. Try particularly to look at those who interrupt others frequently and those who never interrupt and are hesitant about contributing.
More importantly, observe yourself in conversation. When the other party is talking, what are you doing? Waiting to say your piece, or actually listening to them?
