QUICK LINKS

Many of us know what it's like to suffer with depression or know someone who does. For some people it's a very gradual downward spiral and for others it can descend suddenly without warning.
Comforting Hands Whether you're just feeling a bit lost or the grey days have become a permanent black cloud, there are certain factors which can make the situation worse. Isolation, tiredness and repressing your feelings contribute greatly. In the words of  the poem Desiderata: 'Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness'.

This month we've interviewed Hoffman graduate Jo Keveth, who says that the power of opening up and expressing her feelings even before she came on the Process made her realise how much love and support was actually available to her. Sharing from our heart can give us back a sense of perspective and be a useful reality check. It's one of the greatest gifts of the Process to allow you to feel safe enough to do that and to continue to do it once you leave.

Unlike some other courses you aren't required to tell your story to other participants or to listen to theirs. The Process is very much a journey through your inner landscape with loving, expert guidance. However, as you feel more comfortable with your feeings it does become much easier to share if you want to. Many people find their relationships are greatly enriched when they do and the grey days disappear into a much sunnier new perspective on their life.

If you'd like to remind yourself of just how enjoyable life can be, we have a Spring Break Weekend April 14th/15th in Sussex which is open to anyone over 18. You can gain a new perspective using the Enneagram and Family Constellations as well as have fun dancing, drumming and making new friends. This month we're also offering a social event and information evening in Jersey.

If you'd like to shed light on your relationships, you can try the next Singles or Couples Workshops in London and Jersey which are also open to everyone.

For Hoffman graduates the March Support Call will help you create a healthy relationship with food and if you want to reconnect with the Hoffman tools, do join us on the next Reconnection Day in London.

Wishing you a month of discovery

Hoffman Graduates - Interview with Jo Keveth                                                          Back to Top

Beat Depression with the Power of Sharing: Mixed anxiety and depresson is the most common mental problem in the UK and, according to the ONS, depression occurs in 1 in 10 adults or 10 per cent of the population in Britain at any one time. More and more people are reluctant to rely on drugs as a long-term solution and are willing to try new ways of beating depression. Jo shares her experience of the role the Process has played in her journey through anti-depressants and challenging times.

Looking Ahead With Confidence

Jo Keveth
Jo Keveth - Beating Depression
Jo is a full time mother of two young children. She did the Process in September 2009 after suffering from years of depression and now looks forward to the future with new-found confidence.

'I was officially diagnosed with depression ten month's after my first child, Jemima, was born, though I think it was also a delayed reaction to my mother's death four years earlier. On top of that we had just moved to a new area far from family where we hadn't yet got a local network of friends, so I felt quite isolated and lacking in support. I was put on anti-depressants and these did help me cope so, as I settled into the neighbourhood and motherhood I felt able to contemplate the second child I'd always wanted. However, some time after Camilla was born, I realised that the anti-depressants were no longer making any difference, so I weaned myself off them very gradually. I was looking for something else that could help and then a series of events led me to the Hoffman Process.

My Wake Up Call
Around this time, at the start of 2009, I grew close to an older local lady who was also suffering from depression - though hers arrived quite out of the blue - and we gave each other a lot of support. Later that year she overdosed twice and the second time was fatal. It was such a shock and a real wake-up call. I recognised so much of myself in her, because like me, she had appeared to be coping very well on the outside. I became increasingly anxious and short-tempered which affected my relationship with the children - every day I saw myself expressing more of my parents' negative patterns. It was at this point that I....... Read more...

How does the Process help with Depression?

Donna Lancaster
Donna Lancaster, Supervising Hoffman Teacher
Donna Lancaster is Supervising Hoffman teacher with a background in social work specialising in child protection. She is also an Imago Relationship Coach and leads workshops for couples and singles.

'On the Hoffman Process we frequently work with depression and its associated symptoms of low mood, poor self worth, low energy, and general loss of interest or pleasure. The Process supports people in externalising and expressing the often suppressed ('de-pressed') range of emotions held inside for weeks, months and years. These can relate to life circumstances such as a relationship breakdown, career crisis, health issues or bereavement but may also be linked to the past. So for example, a current divorce may trigger issues of abandonment taken on much earlier in life through being sent to boarding school. The Process helps people become more aware of these links, make sense of them and then release the related emotions. Therein lies the healing.

How the Hoffman Process differs from many common approaches to treating depression is that it works with the whole person, the intellect, emotions, spirit and body, rather than focusing purely on the intellect which is often the case with so called 'talking therapies'. Many people come to the Process with great awareness of why they feel and behave the way they do but feel they have a limited ability to change. The Process works on many different levels, using the body primarily to...

Hoffman - Ireland Process - Note from Jeremy                                                            Back to Top
Jeremy's PS to his note of last time...

There was a particular and appropriate focus on Ireland in my note in the last E-newsletter - however an addition is now also appropriate... On the one hand to warmly remember the Processes I taught, and those I met on them, in the UK, and on the other to acknowledge and thank all those in the teaching team with whom I shared many Processes in both countries, and also thanks from Lynda and I to all those in the Arundel office, both now and over the years, and to Serena and Tim for their overall and continuing support. We look forward to an on-going, if a little more distant, relationship with Hoffman UK and Hoffman Ireland in the years to come...

I'm sure you will all join us in wishing Jeremy and Lynda the very best for the future...
