| Students from the first Hoffman Process in September 1995 |
On September 1 1995, Tim Laurence and Serena Gordon ran their first Hoffman Process here in the UK. Thinking back 20 years, even speaking about going on a retreat or personal development course was considered to be brave or barmy. But on 1 September 1995, sixteen people arrived to do the Hoffman Process at Fawley Court in Henley, a massive stately home designed by Sir Christopher Wren and run by a community of Polish nuns.
As graduates know, it's vitally important that the Process venue offers a place of calm, safety, beauty and above all, good food. Sadly the cookery book proffered by Serena was rejected on the grounds that no-one in the kitchen read English. But even a lack of seasoning couldn't diminish the passion of the process. Tim had two very experienced teachers with him - Carmel Lee Paul who ran the Austrian Institute, and Cynthia Merchant from the US. For the next five years we tried a variety of venues before settling at Florence House in 2000, where the Process is still held today.
20 years later, the Hoffman Process is now run twice a month in areas of outstanding natural beauty, and with excellent food and accommodation. The teaching team has expanded and continues to grow. The Hoffman office is beautifully run by Lynn Crescens Smith with support from Clare, Nikki, Susy and Tracy, and David Wallace, our new Managing Director, is steering Hoffman into its next phase.
Hoffman UK want to thank all of you who have been a part of our growth over the past 20 years. With your attendance, support and love we have helped bring the Hoffman Process to thousands of people. We are certainly doing our bit to help spread peace in the world. Here's to the next twenty years!

Congratulations to Hoffman graduate Eleanor Moran, whose new novel 'A Daughter's Secret' was featured on BBC Radio 4 this week.
On Friday's Woman's Hour, Jenni Murray interviewed Eleanor, and our own Nikki Wyatt about one of the key themes of the book - father/daughter relationships. They discussed the impact that the relationship between a father and daughter has on the way a woman might perceive masculinity as she grows up and the issues that can arise when emotional boundaries are crossed. To hear the interview in full, click here and select the chapter 'Difficult Father-Daughter Relationships' (25 minutes into the full broadcast) Eleanor's novel is available to purchase here.

Stephen Bourne's passion is communication. His role at the Centre of Excellence for Tendering and Negotiation at Janssen Pharmaceuticals involves teaching and consulting on practices developed at Harvard Law School.
Stephen did the Hoffman Process in 2006, closely followed by his wife, and the tools he learned added an extra dimension to his work. In this article, he shares his tips about how to negotiate your way through life in order to achieve contentment and success both at work and at home.
"Negotiations aren't reserved for business. They happen every day with everyone around us. We negotiate our way through life from the nursery to the grave. Communicating effectively is a combination of the following: How you listen. What you say. How you say it and the energy and emotion behind what you're saying."

Do something different...
Stretching out of our comfort zone and into new behaviour keeps us moving, alive and sharp. How often do you find yourself on autopilot doing the same thing again and again simply because you can't be bothered to change? You do the same things every morning, go to work the same way, think the same thoughts, see the same people....
What can you do to challenge yourself today? What would be uncomfortable or difficult or new? Start with small things and see how it feels.
