Finding my funny bone, by lawyer and writer Matthew Benz

'My Process week had its own singular moment that I will never forget. On our last day, in one of our closing sessions together as a group at Broughton Sanctuary, someone said something funny that garnered smiles around the circle and a few chuckles, but that made me laugh out loud. I laughed so much that it briefly interrupted the proceedings. A few people marvelled at my strong reaction, which surprised even me, before I settled back down (though I had to bite my lip for several minutes more as I replayed the laugh line in my head).

I now see that laugh as a crack in a wall that had built up inside me. I was known by my fellow Hoffmates – and by my friends and family – as a nice, if rather reserved, fellow. Quiet, polite, not much of a talker, least of all about feelings or difficulties. Of course, there was lots going on behind that façade, but I only let people in at times of great distress, otherwise trying to white-knuckle my way through challenging times.

Fast-forward to October, when I finally signed up for an improv class. For the uninitiated, improv is performing onstage without planning... I say ‘finally’ because I’ve known I’ve loved comedy for a long time, but with the help of the Hoffman Process I’ve learned to call that love by its name...'

Our French Connection: The Hoffman Summer Retreat, June 2-7

For more information, click here

At our five-day Summer Retreat, your work is done in the mornings and evenings, leaving the middle part of the day free to enjoy all the beauty of the French countryside and to relax, swim, walk or socialise with other grads.

The days contain a mix of Hoffman tools and practices that you will remember from your Process, and there’s also the chance to explore other techniques that may be new to you. Grad couples, friends and family members are welcome to attend together.

The pace of the Summer Retreat is less intense than our three-day Q2, however, there's still plenty of time for a deep-dive into those sticky 'areas for improvement' in your life. Perfect for those seeking harmony between work, rest and play.

Dates: Monday 2 - Saturday 7 June

Location: The French Retreat nr Bordeaux , France.

Led by: Serena Gordon and Emma Pruen

To reserve your place, please call Emma on +44 7508 920 583 or email emma@retreat.fr For more information, click here

Three day refresher in Devon: The Q2, July 5-7

For more info & to book, click here

The Hoffman Q2 picks up from the work you started on the Process, applying the transformative power of our tools and practices to your life today. You’ll get the chance to work with others who have done the Process, and with a team of facilitators who may be new to you – but you’ll all share a common grounding in the tools and techniques.

For those still in touch with their original Process groups, Q2 is a great opportunity for you to meet in person and continue the work you started together. We also welcome graduate couples or family members who would like to support one another.

The venue for our Q2 in July will be the gorgeous Rill Estate in Devon, tucked away in 80 acres of woods, fields and organic farmland between Dartmoor and the coast.

Dates: Saturday 5 - Monday 7 July

Location: Rill Estate, Devon UK

Led by: Serena Gordon, Mairi Russell and Chellie van der Bergh
