Making a case for happiness: by barrister, trainer & coach Bev Cripps

To read Bev's article in full, click here

'My parents were very generous with their time, both to those closest to them and in the community, always wanting to help. It was from them that I got a strong sense of justice, of fairness and a desire to advocate for the powerless and those who don’t have a voice.

But again, there was that disconnect – having these wonderful supportive parents who could not have done more to show me how much I was wanted and valued – yet I still had that feeling something vital was missing. I felt almost that I wasn’t entitled to feel the way I did. This feeling which I couldn’t understand or articulate would affect the way my life developed – outwardly successful but inwardly conflicted

In 1988 I was called to the Bar and started a fulfilling legal career. As time went on, I often conducted the most serious cases. Throughout that time, I was struck by the number of people whose lives had been blighted by earlier experiences – often from childhood. Of course, in my professional capacity there was nothing I could do but it got me thinking: why, through no fault of theirs, did these people have to carry that burden for such a long time after the events had passed?

Since I completed the Process, I've seen and experienced how there can be post-traumatic growth. I’m now a licensed resilience trainer, twice-certified positive psychology coach, clinical hypnotherapist and NLP practitioner. I've distilled my research and coaching system into a book called The Lazy Guide to Happy which was launched on the anniversary of the 35th year of my call to the Bar. The book is aimed at people with many commitments, who think that happiness and wellbeing are a 'nice to have' but they have no time'

Extend your stay: Hoffman-only offers from Broughton Sanctuary

To book out March Process at Broughton Sanctuary, click here

Many people coming to the Process have had quite a journey to get there (in miles, as well as figuratively). If you've been pondering the Process at Broughton Sanctuary in March, June or September, you might like to know that it offers the option to combine your visit with a range of additional extras to ease you in and out of your Process week.

You can choose to stay the evening before your Process in one of Broughton's cozy retreat cottages (pictured). Explore the 3000-acre Broughton Estate, visit the multiple Labyrinths or take an early dip in the wild-swimming lake, so you can arrive at the Process rested and refreshed.

Or perhaps you'll decide to arrive on Friday afternoon and settle into Broughton Hall itself. This option includes a night in one of the Hall's exquisite bedrooms with dinner in the main house, a visit to Avalon's pool and sauna suite and even a flotation tank experience.

After the Process, Broughton are also offering a variety of accommodation options exclusively for Hoffman participants. These provide a wonderful opportunity to integrate the work you have done, surrounded by the beauty of nature.

Hoffman Introduction Day in London: Sunday 24 March

For more info and to book, click here

Our Introduction Day in March will be led by Supervising Hoffman Facilitator and Managing Director, Serena Gordon. Serena is one of the co-founders of Hoffman UK, with nearly three decades of experience of the tools and techniques – so if you’ve got questions, here’s a great opportunity to ask them in person.

The day takes the format of a one-day hands-on workshop using techniques from the Process itself, so whether you go on to do the full seven-day course or not, you will definitely learn some useful skills and practical tools to help you with your day-to-day life.

If you’re already interested in signing up to a Process date, the day will provide the chance to try a mini-taster before you commit. It can also be an illuminating day for partners/family members of people who have completed the Process, as it gives you an insight into what they have learned.

A Hoffman graduate is welcome to come along with you for free on the day (they’ll just need to email the office to let us know they’re coming). What’s more, if you do go on to do the residential Hoffman Process within 12 months of an Introduction Day, you’ll receive £100 discount on your future Process fee.

Date: Sunday 24 March

Time: Arrive from 9.30am for a 10.00am start. We aim to finish by 5.00pm

Led by: Supervising Hoffman Facilitator and Managing Director, Serena Gordon
